What did you do last weekend?

My rewrite of Monster Soul is finally COMPLETE 🥳 I recommend choosing the right setting before writing an entire book, but sometimes it just doesn't work that way, lol. You can see those couple of weeks in June and July when I was too busy to write; I always hate that. But the important thing is I didn't let those breaks keep me from getting back to it. Keep editing!

"Humanity Through a Lens" is the League of Utah Writers' newest anthology, and my fantasy short story "Magic Can't Heal Everything" is included 🥳🥳🥳 The League says: "Examine what makes humans human—the beautiful and the terrible, the underrated joys and the grim realities we’d sometimes rather leave in the shadows." My story does fall under "grim reality" but it ends on a hopeful note as my character finds healing through forgiveness ❤️ Or that's the intent, anyway. You'll have to read it and let me know if I succeeded or not 😁

Queen and fireworks to Lee Greenwood. What more could I want for the 4th of July? 😁 @bohemianqueenband did an AMAZING job. In their words, they're just a bunch of goofballs who love Queen, lol, but I appreciate them sharing their talent and giving me the opportunity to hear Queen music, live, even years after Freddie Mercury's passing.

All. The. Editing. I was asked by @bluequillchapter to do some line edits for our mystery anthology this year, and it's been fun, exhausting, and educational 😁 Thanks @lizlowham for teaching me how to do it! If anyone out there has a line editor, make sure you thank them! This is a LOT of work 🤯

The "replace all" function on Word is nice but fraught with danger 🤣 I've found some fun writing mistakes during my rewrite, lol. What are some funny misspellings you've had in your books (reading or writing)?

I got accepted into another anthology 🥳🥳🥳 This is the mystery short story I wrote for the Blue Quill Chapter of the League of Utah Writers. It's titled "The Detective, The Dragon, and The Sorcerer" and is by-far the hardest short story I've ever written (mystery is HARD). WOOT!

Things from StoryCon last weekend. This was from a panel on writing dialogue. "As you know, Bob" is something to always avoid. Less experienced writers tend to fall into this trap, where they need their readers to know something, so they have one character explain to another. Except both characters already know the information, so it's a completely unnatural conversation for them to be having! (ie a world renowned baker isn't going to say to another baker, "As you know, Bob, we need five cups of flour to make this bread.")

Things from StoryCon last weekend. Whether you're writing a mystery or not, if you want a suspicious character, these are some good tips. I'm working on a mystery short story, and my novel has a couple elements of mystery, so this was a useful class! Ally Condie, the presenter and a successful mystery novelist, also recommended having your MC be one of the suspicious characters if possible 😛

I won 1st and 3rd Place in the unpublished Horror short story category at the Quills Writing Conference! What's better than a weekend of writing? Writing with friends! The 2026 Quills Conference hosted by the League of Utah Writers was a blast. My favorite activities: dinner with members of the Blue Quill chapter and making some dark fantasy buttons.
