Revisited an old query letter I wrote for my previous novel so I could begin one for "Monster Soul." This query letter got a request for a full manuscript a couple of years ago, so that was heartening. That novel was ultimately rejected, but I still considered it progress. Here's a quick summary of things I put in my query letter:

• Personalize: The internet makes it very easy to look up peoples' names and emails. There's no excuse for starting with "To whom it may concern" or "Dear publisher"! Look up specific people who are looking for your kind of book (try querytracker.net if you're stuck).

• Book title and length: Hopefully self-explanatory... Try for a catchy title and a word count suitable to your genre.

• Genre: Speaking of genre, your book needs to have one. Agents/publishers are looking for books they can sell, meaning they need to know how to market it. If you put your genre as horror, fantasy, and romance, it's less likely to get picked up.

• Comp titles: Find one or two books that remind you of your book so the agent/publisher knows the gist of what you're offering. Even better if the comp titles are recently published (within the last five years) and sold reasonably well.

• Book summary/teaser: Tell them what your book is about! Some people give a full synopsis, others a teaser. The important thing is to make the agent/publisher want to read your manuscript!

• Writing experience: If you've published anything before, tell them that! Writers conferences are also a plus. It's okay if this section is short or not there if you have none.

• Keep it short: Seriously. Agents/publishers read thousands of these; keep it brief and to the point. Mine was just over 350 words, and I've been told even that could be cut down to under 300 words!

• Thank them for reading: Be kind! I usually say something like, "Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I hope to hear from you soon."

BOOK REVIEW: Willow Marsh by Jo Cassidy
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pretty good! There were some really engaging scenes, especially the séances when Tessa tries to contact her mother but lets in other spirits instead 😬 And I love Graham. I didn't give it four stars, though, because it took a really long time for Tessa to take charge; mostly she was bouncing around having things happen to her. Then there was the love triangle, which I'm rarely a fan of, even if it wasn't Tessa's fault (yay ghost possession 👻).

THINGS I LIKED:
• Graham is adorable with how shy and nervous he is, and so interesting to see an author give a character twitches and a stutter.
• Tessa can summon spirits, though she clearly has no control of it
• Tessa and Graham's backstories are TRAGIC. It made for some really good moments in the story.
• All of the séance scenes were really well written! So intense!
• I liked how torn Tessa was about wanting to see her mom and brother again but knowing resurrecting them would be a bad idea. It was a good character moment.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• Blake. Yuck. He practically pounced on Tessa the first time they met, and it just got worse from there.
• Delilah. Was there really a point to her being in the story besides putting a roadblock between Tessa and Graham? The scene where she takes over Tessa and almost sleeps with Blake was terrible.
• Reed. I'm not supposed to like him, though, so this one isn't actually a dislike. He was a good villain, but ooh, he and the sheriff made me SO mad!
• The end scene was kinda meh for me. Tessa just runs around hiding from Reed and then Delilah makes her shoot him? I wanted Tessa to make that choice instead.
• I wish there had been more about the box that brings people back to life and why Willow Marsh is a powerful place...

I wrote a quick sci-fi short story to submit to my writers group this weekend and tried really hard to use my favorite scientific term in it. Alas, "spaghettification" didn't actually make the final cut in my story. But there is a captain who's flying into a black hole, and another captain has to try to talk him out of it *cue sinister music*

BOOK REVIEW: Bloodmarked (Legendborn #2) by Tracy Deonn
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An excellent sequel! Wow, this author likes to keep her readers on their toes. Once again, I did not see that ending coming... SO glad the third book just came out, otherwise I'd be dying 😅 Warning: lots of spoilers

THINGS I LIKED:
• Dragon Bree!
• Bree and Sel FINALLY kiss, hallelujah
• Learning more about the demon world and about other magic users in general
• Bree interacting with Arthur, Merlin, and the Round Table (normally I love Arthur as the good guy, but he was a great villain in this one!)
• just about every interaction between Bree and Sel, even when they're fighting
• Sel doing the impossible and saving Bree by holding her together with thousands of constructs
• Bree sharing her Root with Sel to get away from Arabus (Idk how to spell it cuz audio book, lol)

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• There is a lot of Bree complaining that she can't control her powers but we don't see her practicing very often. So of course she can't control them! Even if we find out later that Arthur was sabotaging her, still...
• Nick killing that merlin and then running away! AHHH! It wasn't actually a bad part, it just made me mad 😅
• When Bree-Arthur threw Alice 😭😭😭 Again, not actually bad, but OUCH. MY HEART 💔
• The Regents are so irritating and such hypocrites, I hope they all die in the next one

I finished my rewrite! And had to look up whether my story needed an epilogue or just a final chapter. Here's what I found! I have a time jump and a much shorter chapter for my ending, so I am calling it an epilogue.

If the ending of your manuscript has any of these, you can use an epilogue (but you don't have to; there isn't a hard rule about it):

• You started your story with a prologue.
• Your last chapter is from a different POV than the rest of the story.
• The final events happen after a time jump.
• The last chapter is shorter than your usual chapters throughout the story.
• Your last chapter has a change in style or tone.
• You need to set up a hook for the sequel.
• Your main story is complete, and you want to show the fate of your characters after.

Mine: A guy gets shot by his wife, and as he's running away, he goes to open his car door but it gets struck by lightning and blows him and the door handle twenty feet back. In real life, that would be quite the coincidence, but since I write fantasy, the wife probably had something to do with it 😁

Had to take a break from writing this weekend for Valentine's 😁❤️ My boyfriend surprised me with flowers, balloons, and this cute little fire-breathing pet, hehe. I had to name him 'Kaz' because he was inspired by a comment when we were watching Shadow and Bone 😛 Then my boyfriend took me to the opera! I'd never been before, but I love music, and wow can those people sing 🎶

BOOK REVIEW: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A friend recommended this one to me, and I'm so glad she did! I loved it! Can't wait to read the sequel.
Warning: spoilers ahead

THINGS I LIKED:
• I'm a sucker for anything Arthurian legend, so this was a fun twist on the round table still being active today through a spell Merlin cast way back when.
• The author writes traumatic grief really well! I was impressed.
• The magic is super cool, and I'm also a fan of characters who have power no one understands or that "shouldn't" be possible.
• Root magic (borrowed from ancestors) vs Ether (bound by blood) magic was also a cool contrast. The Ether weapons were my favorite Ether, and the memory walks for Root.
• Sel: his powers as a merlin, his sass, how much he cares but tries not to show it, his temper tantrums 😂
• The twist at the end! Nick is actually Lancelot's scion and Bree is actually Arthur's. I love it. Though kinda funny that Lord Davis and his ancestors have thought they were the line of Arthur for like 200 years.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• Not sure if I really see Bree and Nick as a couple. She spent more time with Sel... Though she does hint at the end that maybe their attraction is because he's her first knight, so maybe that's where the author is leading.
• The medium stuff seemed like a bit much. Depending on how the author handles it in the next book, Bree might be TOO powerful by the end of this book.

BOOK REVIEW: Once Upon a Future Time, Vol. 4
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A bunch of fun sci-fi stories adapted from all kinds of fairy tales/famous stories. My five favorite ones were as follows:

1. The Emperor's Test by Elizabeth Lowham: Retelling of "The Emperor's New Clothes" except instead of invisible clothes, it's an invisible ship. Excellent job @lizlowham

2. Artificial Beauty by Sara Itka: Retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" where Aurora and the prince are AIs.

3. The Adventures of Severin Miles, TFC by Tiffanie Gray: Retelling of "The White Snake." Not sure what that is, but I liked the tech that allows him to talk to robots.

4. Spinning Gold by Jason P. Crawford: Retelling of "Rumplestiltskin" except Rumplestiltskin is an AI that wants to take over the protagonist's husband's mind *cue sinister music*

5. Marshmallow Moon by Brittany Rainsdon: Retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" except they're abandoned on a planet with a scientist who wants to change them with a gene pool instead of an oven.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A bunch of fun sci-fi stories adapted from all kinds of fairy tales/famous stories. My five favorite ones were as follows:

BOOK REVIEW: Infinity Kings by Adam Silvera (#3 in the Infinity Cycle series)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved it! It was way better than the second book, and made the second book worth reading 😁 All the feels in this book, and an epic conclusion to the series! (Warning: spoilers!)

THINGS I LIKED:
• Emil and Brighton deciding they might have to kill each other but then realizing they can't do it because they care about each other too much.
• More retrocycling! So cool
• The resurrection ritual - yikes, that's so dangerous but it added some really good tension in the book.
• Luna finally dies, YAY
• Ness taking down the Senator 🥳
• Emil and Brighton resurrecting as themselves
• Emil gets a happy ending with Ness and a baby phoenix ❤️

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• Emil picked Ness over Wyatt 😭 Don't get me wrong, it was done well and I like Ness, but I feel so bad for Wyatt!
• Maribelle and Talla. Not shocking, considering I haven't liked Maribelle from the beginnin. Talla didn't make it any better.
• The first forty minutes of the book is Emil narrating what happened in the first two books. That was annoying. And the last hour is the longest wrap up I've ever read in any book.

BOOK REVIEW: Promise Boys by Nick Brooks
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This isn't my usual type of book (a modern who-dun-it mystery rather than fantasy), but it was really good! I decided to read it because I'm writing a book where all the characters are black, and I wanted to see what else is out there. Anyone who reads this review: do you think it's weird for a very white girl (me) to write a book with all black characters?

THINGS I LIKED:
• The set up and writing style is so different! The beginning is me up of testimonials and chapters leading up to the murder before it goes into a more traditional one character per chapter.
• The audiobook was very entertaining; there's a lot of background music and noises that really set the scene.
• I felt so bad for all three main characters! They're all in a bad spot because any one of them had the means and the motive to kill the principal (who was horrible, btw; this school sounded more like a prison!).
• I loved that they all ended up working together to figure out the murder. The ending was SO satisfying!!!
• I did eventually figure out who the murderer was before it was revealed, but before that I was suspecting all kinds of people. I think the author led me to figure out who it was, so that was very skillfully done.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• JB's introduction was off-putting for me. I eventually ended up liking him, but it took longer than for the other two.
• I don't think it was ever explained why that female teacher (forgot her name, oops) ended up not being pregnant? She took maternity leave and then didn't have a baby?

BOOK REVIEW: Lore by Alexandra Bracken
⭐️⭐️

This book has such a cool concept, but I did not like the execution, unfortunately. I came SO close to labeling it "DNF" but decided to push through. I almost bumped it up to three stars when Lore had to make a huge sacrifice at the end, but then the author undid the sacrifice (super annoying), and the final star count is still two.

THINGS I LIKED:
• Hunters chasing down Greek gods to kill them for their powers
• Lore's backstory (so tragic! I wish that had been the book, honestly)
• The twist with Athena was really good! I figured she couldn't be trusted, but I didn't guess exactly what her deal was.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• I got really confused about which Greek house was which. Maybe this would've been better if I was reading a hard copy and could go back and look; alas, audiobook makes this difficult.
• Too many flashbacks
• The author likes to write REALLY long dialogue scenes, then short action scenes, then more REALLY long dialogues.
• It was hard for me to really like any of the characters. I can't pinpoint any particular reason, though it could be just because I was so annoyed with all the excessive dialogue.
• As I already mentioned, Lore made a huge sacrifice to save the day at the end, which was epic. I was imagining her and Castor trying to make their relationship work with their new powers/life circumstances. But then Lore wished it away, and it worked? That was totally lame!

I also have to point out I usually don't like stories as much when the main character isn't the one with powers. So maybe I need to read Alexandra Bracken's "The Darkest Minds," and I'd like her writing better. But right now, I'm not too keen to read any more of her stuff.

BOOK REVIEW: King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Man, @lbardugo did it again! Maybe someday I'll read something of hers that I don't love, but it hasn't happened yet ❤️ I didn't realize there would be so many references to Six of Crows in here, so I kinda wish I'd refreshed my memory on those before reading this one (it's been several years now), but I still managed to figure things out.

Things I liked:
• Nikolai struggling with a literal demon inside of him whil trying to maintain his hold on Ravka and stop another war from starting. I honestly have no idea how he's going to pull it off.
• Zoya's storm powers are wonderful. And I love the fact they only get stronger (I won't say how, major spoiler, but it was AWESOME). I would not complain if she ends up becoming queen, not gonna lie.
• All the super-confident quips even in the face of extreme peril, lol.
• Nina struggling with her grief and new zombie powers (which are also SO cool). I'm very interested to see where her storyline leads.
• The crazy submarines Nikolai is building.
• I love how the author interwove a bunch of politics in here without me feeling bogged down by it. There's a lot of tension throughout the book, it's great.
• The surprise twist at the end. NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Things I didn't like:
• Nikolai/Zoya's story felt very disconnected from Nina's. I assume they'll cross over in the sequel, but it still made the book feel a bit longer than usual because you're always jumping back and forth.
• When Nikolai and Zoya get transported to...not sure what to call it. That place with the Saints. It was a little jarring and I had no idea what to think or even suspect from it.
• I still don't know where this duology is going 😅
• The surprise twist at the end. NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Super excited to read the sequel! 🥳🥳🥳

BOOK REVIEW: Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a random find for me when I was looking for one of @lbardugo other books. But I'm so glad I read it! I loved it!

Things I liked:
• Diana is such a fun character! There are times I can see her exactly as in the movies, and other times where she's completely unique to this story (which has nothing to do with the movies, btw).
• The superpowers 😎
• A couple of really good twists that I won't spoil here. I predicted one of them, kinda, but the other took me completely by surprise.
• The side characters were a hoot. Even their arguments were entertaining.
• The "sisters in battle" thread throughout the story was both heartwarming at times and heartbreaking at others.

Things I didn't like:
• It would've been cool if Alia figured out her powers before the end of the book.
• I really can't think of anything else...this was just a fun book.

I'm very interested in reading some more books in the DC Icons series now!

Book update March 2025: The rewrite is finished! And I like it better than the rough draft 🥳 I did a little more editing for draft three, making things consistent. And now draft 4 is out to beta readers. So it's moving along! Word count: 85k

The ending was EPIC and I'll be reading the final book. But there were several spots throughout the beginning and middle that were super long and boring. So it was kinda hard to pick a rating.

THINGS I LIKED:
• Emil finally has a positive goal he wants to work toward - becoming a Halo Knight! That would be super cool.
• Retrocycling is a really cool idea, too.
• Ness giving Emil a clue on live TV, and they break into Senator Iron's house to rescue their mom
• Emil and Wyatt were a cute couple, even if it didn't last long. Not sure how I feel about him and Ness...
• Brighton finally reveals his true colors! The author did a great job of leading up to that character arc.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
• Brighton and Prudencia. Their relationship came out of nowhere and I didn't like them as a couple at all.
• Maribelle is still super annoying. Pretty sure I hated every one of her chapters.
• What was even the point of Brighton getting so sick at the beginning? This book was long, and some scenes at the beginning really could have been shortened or cut all together.
